From VOA Learning English, this is the Education Report. PLAY

Today we offer another report on how to write papers for high school and college. Jennifer Ahern- Dodson is a writing teacher at Duke University in North Carolina. She also serves as outreach director and language arts and media program director for the Thompson Writing Program at Duke. PLAY

Ms. Ahern-Dodson says probably everyone has had difficulty writing an essay or paper at some time. She says when writing seems easy it is usually because the writer has something important to say. Today the professor gives some tips about how to get those important ideas on paper. PLAY

Ms. Ahern-Dodson says a student should begin to write even before finishing all the research needed for the paper. She says writing about where you are at the moment can help you discover what you want to express. She also says you should note what information other people have already presented about the subject. What points do you find interesting? The professor says this process can help you decide what you want to write to answer what others have said. Or it can help you decide what additional research you might need. PLAY

Ms. Ahern-Dodson also strongly advises working with other writers. She says they can give you feedback on your ideas as you are developing them. She says you can learn from others how well you are communicating your ideas. And you can learn if your writing is interesting. For this reason, Professor Ahern-Dodson spends a lot of her time helping students and professors form writing groups. PLAY
