Writing an essay or paper for school can feel like – and often is – a big challenge. But an expert from Duke University in North Carolina has some ideas to make the process easier and produce better results. Jennifer Ahern- Dodson is an assistant writing professor. She also helps organize writing groups for both students and teachers. She believes getting writing advice and suggestions from others can help the writing process. PLAY

Ms. Ahern-Dodson says that students usually share their writing when it is in its final version. Instead, she suggests that students seek comments and advice on earlier versions. She says try to find someone who you think can provide helpful criticism. PLAY

Ms. Ahern-Dodson also says you may want more than one reader to comment. You may want a writing group. She says a lot of her work involves helping students and teachers form writing communities. She says one requirement for a good writing group is that each person must offer his or her work for comment. She says that is critical to building trust. PLAY

Ms. Ahern-Dodson also says a successful writing group has rules, including what kind of criticism is acceptable. The professor says sharing writing can reduce tensions, especially those caused by deadlines. Ms. Ahern- Dodson says some people form writing groups where they live. Others establish groups with other students from their classes. She says such groups can not only help you get your writing going but also keep it going. And Professor Ahern- Dodson says that is very valuable. PLAY
